#91: Tour a Lighthouse

This is part of our 100 Things in 2014 challenge. Here’s the full list.

When you’re camping a quarter-mile away, it’s easy to make a trip to a lighthouse.

We went to the gift shop and bought our tour tickets (making sure to tell the cashier how many bricks are in the lighthouse for a discount), and headed over to the thing itself.

We each got to climb up into the light one at a time. It’s a super-rare first-order Fresnel lens, built in Paris in 1890.

The docent gave us lots of good facts, and the kids asked a few good questions. We were a bit sad to leave.

“Man, I just love learning about history, don’t you?”
