#62: Surprise Date – Planned Entirely by Ben

This is part of our 100 Things in 2014 challenge. Here’s the full list.

Becky’s the planner in our little family (I’m just the one with a gift for understatement), so most of our outings are effectively of her making. We decided to switch it up, because as much as she loves organizing and planning, Becky also loves being a passenger.

So it was up to me. I started with food: what’s a kind of cuisine we haven’t tried yet? I know: Egyptian food! I found this place, which you can tell from their website is kitchy in a classy way.

Unfortunately, the food wasn’t very good. It felt like they put Egyptian names on Sysco pre-made dishes. It was a risk which didn’t pan out.

But what I had planned next did. We’ve been watching Last Week Tonight for a while now, and we’re huge fans. John Oliver happened to be in town doing a live show at Keller Auditorium that night, so I got some tickets.

It should come as no surprise that he’s just as funny live.

Afterwards, we went to one of our neighborhood haunts for a super-late second supper (since we hadn’t eaten much at the first one). This was the best part of the date, and it wasn’t even planned – we were tired from laughing, super relaxed, cozy, exchanging puns and groans – even our taste buds were happy. It was everything great about our relationship.
