For at least a year (maybe five), Lucy has been bugging us about getting her ears pierced. Many of her friends have earrings, and she’s been wanting to join the club. We told her we’d “start thinking about it when you hit double digits.”

So along came her 10th birthday. And we thought about it. And we decided she was ready. So we picked her up from school, and without telling her, took her to the Claire’s at the mall. She was thrilled, and extremely surprised.

She got both ears pierced at the same time, and went home with a you-have-open-wounds-now kit and a few more sets of earrings for after the initial healing process.

We’re now into month four, and we were right to trust her – she’s been really responsible with her ears, and has done a fantastic job of taking care of her inevitable infection. She’s still thrilled with them, and makes sure to coordinate her earrings with the rest of her outfit every day.
